WokeKindergarten is owned and created by Ki and is a global abolitionist early learning community that supports children, families, educators, and organizations in their commitment of abolitionist teaching and Pro-Black liberation in the early years. They said that children need a space where they can envision possible futures or present realities, where they can be affirmed, celebrated and seen. They said that “a liberatory future is where Black Trans people, Black Queer people, all Black people, all Indigenous people are able to, not only live, but to thrive in this world.” Their saying is “All power to the little people!”
2019 Social Justice Award Recipient
Valente' Gibson The NCTE Early Childhood Education Assembly is proud to announce the recipients of the 2019 “Social Justice Award,” toValente' Gibson. Mr. Gibson is a 5th grade teacher in Columbia, SC. He has focused on the brilliance of Black students and their families as an anti-racist pedagogy. As one of his nominees stated, “He has offered his students opportunities to participate in civic-minded education by constantly using a number of culturally sustaining pedagogical moves. On any given day, one might hear Valente' seamlessly integrating historical and contemporary issues, including engagements and lectures around Black Codes and #BlackLivesMatter. He is not afraid to touch on the difficult histories and topics so many teachers shy away from day in and day out.” The Early Childhood Education Assembly is honored to bestow this Social Justice award upon such a deserving educator.
